Progress - 11th March 2012

WALKING LIKE JOHN WAYNE

I'll explain that later, it's not a pretty site so finish your tea.

Who would have thought it, Tuesday evening I was bouncing about like a teenager, well an out of date teenager true, but I was.
The weather was bright and cheerful and that helps, the evenings continue to draw out, nearly 6.00 now before it gets dark and I love the Spring with all that new life sprouting up everywhere - except into my legs.

I managed a respectable 7.5 miles Tuesday evening which even included an extra hill rep, just for fun.

Come Thursday the enthusiasm had wained and I wasn't looking forward to this but slowly and surely I took each piece of my route as it came and managed to get back to 8.4 miles so felt happy with that.

I was aching a bit on Friday I can tell you and had some good advice regarding this from Arthur [My mental-take that how you will-trainer from last year], he advised that the best thing to ease the pain, ''I should stop #$%&£@ running''. Fair comment really.

Well with Sundays long run again to take place around the picturesque Virginia Water Lake, I wondered if anyone would be joining me, even asked the other half if she fancied coming out for the morning. [not to run for Christs sake, behave, she couldn't run a bath and would break out in a sweat just putting on a pair of trainers]. No, just for moral support, you know sit at the picnic tables supping a cup of coffee and waving as I go by, didn't expect a Mexican wave or anything but no I was told in no uncertain terms that that would not be happening. She doesn't like mornings you see, although I did point out that it would be afternoon by the time I finished but she isn't daft like me, prefers to spend Sunday morning sleeping - I have distant memories of that.

So at 8.30 in the morning I was there on my own, all lonely, with no-one with me, thinking of tying the jog tracker to a dog and slapping it's backside.
Lovely morning out there, too nice to run really.
It hurt and was as difficult as ever it was. I can only assume I have run out of running power. Some familiar faces [and Lycra] now on my 3rd visit and quite a few shouts of encouragement from cyclists as they whizz by.
I had made up my mind that I needed to do 4 laps minimum this week and after 3, which is only 12 miles, I was struggling. To add further insult I became aware of chaffing at the top of my inner thighs, sweaty underwear rubbing on the opposing legs, cor it didn't half sting. Now I know all those mothers pushing toddlers around in prams would have sudocrem but as I contemplated asking for a handful, I could see this might seem a bit odd coming from a stranger, even if he has got his name on his shirt, a request for sudocrem or maybe a smidgen of Vaseline - no  I refrained and pushed on in much distress.

I made the 4th lap, taking the total to 16.6 miles but no way I could go any further, I was wiped out even without the chaffing so that would do for today.

As I walked across the car park to retrieve my vehicle, a familiar voice called out and it Mr & Mrs Dix with daughter Billie and their 16 week old cocker spaniel, Tommy. Apparently he would have joined me again this week but he was too busy shovelling bacon and eggs into his belly - lucky bloke.
A tip here for any blokes wanting to meet gorgeous women, get a puppy, I couldn't believe the attention he was getting. We had a lovely cup of tea as the dog took centre stage and that was me finished for the day - completely!!

My number and chip for the Reading half on 1st April has now arrived so its all starting to click into place - blimey.
That will be my first official outing in the charity top and is only 3 weeks away!!

5 WEEKS TO BRIGHTON - DON'T PANIC

This weeks tune has gone right back to 1964

Dusty Springfield and ''I just don't know what to do with myself''

 Like a summer rose
needs the sun and rain
I need your sweet love
to beat all the pain.

Quite apt I thought--ooohh.
