Progress - 25th March 2012

Take pity on an old man

Will I make it or will I end up six foot under in a wooden box lined with a dozen pairs of worn out trainers for eternal company? Who knows but I do know I am determined to reach my target of £1500 to help St.Georges provide additional comfort for patients, staff and visitors so please help me if you can or come along and give me some support at one of the 4 runs I'm doing. Its worth coming along just to see the state of me when I eventually cross the finish line, I don't need a McLaren victory T-shirt, I'm naturally a brighter shade of red.

What a beautiful week we've had weather wise and doesn't it make you feel better, definately a pink week Yvette, shame to go to work when it's like that.

Anyway hows the old git been doing running wise, well I did go road running on Tuesday evening and with the new tyres strapped on I fair floated round, gliding along the tarmac like a rocket sled on rails. Well its was good anyway and I did 7.5 miles with hill reps in amongst just for a laugh. So take note even if your trainers look good and tread is still like new it doesn't mean they are still good enough, 6 weeks mine have lasted. Mind you I don't expect any of you armchair sportsters will be testing my theory, you're all too sensible!

Thursday evening I was really up for a good long sprint but Maribel had invited the Brighton and the London marathon runners up to Tooting for a curry night out. Well it would be rude not to after all the work the team and her do so I didn't run I munched instead. It was a really good night, great to see the others and swap stories and tales of woe. Thank you Maribel.
After the meal Caroline and me had more entertainment lined up, we decided to forget where the car was parked and then try to find it. What a good laugh, we found it after 45 minutes and some very comical moments along the way. I feel someone in Tooting is owed an appology but couldn't for the life of me tell you why, suffice to say I was in tears of laughter all the way home and still spontaneously burst into giggles.

Summer time began today, hooray, I love this time of year despite losing an hours sleep.

Have a look where I went today by clicking the link.

My last long run today before the last long run, if you see what I mean.
A struggle as usual to part from my pillow, however the cause keeping me focused and so out into the crisp sunshine I go and I took each section of the route seperate in my head so as to make it a less daunting trek. A big disadvantage of running the same routes over and over again is the sheer mental struggle knowing where you are and where you have to go next and how far you are from each stage, especially when distractions are lacking en-route. I've never been a fan of music pumping into earphones when running as you never know whats happening around you, bad enough sometimes as it is with people or cars creeping up on you.
Todays first 13 miles went fairly well actually although it was a bit hot in places. I managed my energy gels just right with 1 at 5, 10, 14 and 17 miles and did get a benefit each time which was satisfying. Then pace from there on not any quicker but probably not any slower so happy enough with that and I didn't need walk breaks. At 16 miles I would have happily given up but knowing I have to go a lot further soon, I managed to push on but it was quiet out there, everyone still in bed following the clock change I expect.
As I came down through Knaphill I was on auto pilot yet somehow my home got closer and I finally found myself back in my garden and looking forward to seeing Lewis and Jenson battle it out in Malaysia.

20 miles, have a think when you're out in the car next, where that would get you from home, its mental and this silly sod runs it, where are the men in white coats when you need them, I'd go peacfully.

Spare a thought for me next Sunday as I run the 13 mile half marathon at Reading.

I'm as ready as I ever will be but need some support guys

Top tune this week from 1978 has to be:
The Electric Light Orchestra with 'MR BLUE SKY'

Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mister blue sky is living here today hey, hey

Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

 See you all next week,

I have my running number and a date with destiny.

It really is getting close now with only 2 weeks to the Reading half marathon, which is appropriately on April fools day and my running number at Reading is 5073
2 weeks after the Brighton and the wind down begins, if I'm still alive, with my old favourite 10K [only 6.25 miles] the Clandon Park run witch starts from George Abbot school Burpham and its only on MY BIRTHDAY so might have to have some cake afterwards....... Then a month later the final run will be the London Bupa 10K, on May 27th, around the best section of the London marathon course and that's it finito, the end, no more, let the belly grow!!
I have learnt this year that I should have been doing this years ago because now my legs don't like it which is so frustrating but there you go, I'm past it and I recognise that, fitness is definitely wasted on the youth.

I took a rest this week, due to fact I'm knackered, so on Tuesday it was an hour work out on the cross trainer, well a change is as good as a rest.
Come Thursday I couldn't do it at all and was persuaded to instead miss training for one night and prepare my mate Colins' house for his return from honeymoon with his beautiful wife Sabina. Some of it he liked, then some of it he didn't, I don't know you just can't please some people. HaHa - I didn't do the bit he didn't like, clear conscious me.

Very pleased to see Nigel and Sarah on Thursday evening and get an update on his poor OLD knee, an op is on the cards soon we hope and then he will be able to beat me again.

I picked up my 'nother pair' of new trainers on Saturday, [blooming attachments that go into them I need renewing] and planned my long run for Sunday.
Up at 6.30 for a healthy porridge and granola breakfast and then wish I could go back to bed. A decent pause to let the belly digest away and off out at 8.30 into the beautiful sunny morning air. Very steady pace and all strapped up I took in my old half marathon training route out to Brookwood, Pirbright, Guildford and back to Woking. Then it was along Hook heath borders down to St.Johns Canal, up to Brookwood again and along to Knaphill and back home. A route I was sure would be 20 miles but the scattylites tell me otherwise and state a modest 18.5.[I've told you about the importance of halves before]

Well it wore me out I don't know about you.

An invition from Maribell this week to join the runners for this years London and Brighton marathon for a get together in Tooting. Looking forward to meeting the other runners and hearing how everyone is getting along  - a big thankyou to Maribell for this opportunity as I doubt if I'll be able to chat much after the event due to the oxygen mask.  [Don't panic]

Well done to the McLaren team for the job done in Austaralia today

This weeks tune is a big one from 1974 , Its none other than
Messers BACHMAN TURNER AND OVERDIVE and YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING YET

   You ain't seen nothin' yet
Baby, you just ain't seen nothin' yet
Here's something, here's something,
here's something, mama, you're never gonna forget
B-B-B-Baby, you just ain't seen nu-nu-nu-nothin' yet
You ain't been around

 See you all next week,

WALKING LIKE JOHN WAYNE

I'll explain that later, it's not a pretty site so finish your tea.

http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/alannelless

Who would have thought it, Tuesday evening I was bouncing about like a teenager, well an out of date teenager true, but I was.
The weather was bright and cheerful and that helps, the evenings continue to draw out, nearly 6.00 now before it gets dark and I love the Spring with all that new life sprouting up everywhere - except into my legs.

I managed a respectable 7.5 miles Tuesday evening which even included an extra hill rep, just for fun.

Come Thursday the enthusiasm had wained and I wasn't looking forward to this but slowly and surely I took each piece of my route as it came and managed to get back to 8.4 miles so felt happy with that.

I was aching a bit on Friday I can tell you and had some good advice regarding this from Arthur [My mental-take that how you will-trainer from last year], he advised that the best thing to ease the pain, ''I should stop #$%&£@ running''. Fair comment really.

Well with Sundays long run again to take place around the picturesque Virginia Water Lake, I wondered if anyone would be joining me, even asked the other half if she fancied coming out for the morning. [not to run for Christs sake, behave, she couldn't run a bath and would break out in a sweat just putting on a pair of trainers]. No, just for moral support, you know sit at the picnic tables supping a cup of coffee and waving as I go by, didn't expect a Mexican wave or anything but no I was told in no uncertain terms that that would not be happening. She doesn't like mornings you see, although I did point out that it would be afternoon by the time I finished but she isn't daft like me, prefers to spend Sunday morning sleeping - I have distant memories of that.

So at 8.30 in the morning I was there on my own, all lonely, with no-one with me, thinking of tying the jog tracker to a dog and slapping it's backside.
Lovely morning out there, too nice to run really.
It hurt and was as difficult as ever it was. I can only assume I have run out of running power. Some familiar faces [and Lycra] now on my 3rd visit and quite a few shouts of encouragement from cyclists as they whizz by.
I had made up my mind that I needed to do 4 laps minimum this week and after 3, which is only 12 miles, I was struggling. To add further insult I became aware of chaffing at the top of my inner thighs, sweaty underwear rubbing on the opposing legs, cor it didn't half sting. Now I know all those mothers pushing toddlers around in prams would have sudocrem but as I contemplated asking for a handful, I could see this might seem a bit odd coming from a stranger, even if he has got his name on his shirt, a request for sudocrem or maybe a smidgen of Vaseline - no  I refrained and pushed on in much distress.

I made the 4th lap, taking the total to 16.6 miles but no way I could go any further, I was wiped out even without the chaffing so that would do for today.

As I walked across the car park to retrieve my vehicle, a familiar voice called out and it Mr & Mrs Dix with daughter Billie and their 16 week old cocker spaniel, Tommy. Apparently he would have joined me again this week but he was too busy shovelling bacon and eggs into his belly - lucky bloke.
A tip here for any blokes wanting to meet gorgeous women, get a puppy, I couldn't believe the attention he was getting. We had a lovely cup of tea as the dog took centre stage and that was me finished for the day - completely!!

My number and chip for the Reading half on 1st April has now arrived so its all starting to click into place - blimey.
That will be my first official outing in the charity top and is only 3 weeks away!!

5 WEEKS TO BRIGHTON - DON'T PANIC

This weeks tune has gone right back to 1964

Dusty Springfield and ''I just don't know what to do with myself''

 Like a summer rose
needs the sun and rain
I need your sweet love
to beat all the pain.

Quite apt I thought--ooohh.

Progress - 4th March 2012

With a little help from my friends.

Cor blimey missus, did I really volunteer for this? Raving bonkers pal.

Its been a tough old week, a familiar tale of late, but I have finally realised I really am getting too old for all this. I have seen my times get further away from what they were a few years back and it does demoralise you. Self pity I suppose, because then you look at St. Georges work or hear a reference from someones first hand experience within the wards and you know its all worth it. I know I've said before that supporting a hospital in Tooting seems odd at first but I bet you all know someone who's been there. The specialist care given within the wards of this fine establishment deserves our support and whilst we can, we should and beware not to take it for granted.

I had a hard time of it on Tuesday evening, completing my normal routine run with the hill reps but at a slower pace and pains all over. [Its time for the knackers yard I reckon]

Time for a rest, or break at least and so on Thursday, after deciding to do nothing, I actually did an hours workout on the cross trainer. I feel I have to do something but am very tired, anyway it made a change and gave my knees a rest.

I had even resolved to not go out on Sunday, instead stay in bed and rest however an offer from Dixie. [The best portable appliance tester in the South http://www.surreyelectricalsafey.co.uk/ ]
Dixie has given up smoking and resolved a healthier lifestyle and as part of it he wanted to get out for some exercise around Virginia Water Lake.
A mutual goal and wanting to see him suffer like myself, [Joking mate] I agreed to meet him at 8.30 on a very wet, cold and rainy Sunday morning. I have a sneaking suspicion he had hoped I wouldn't go but no! an opportunity to have company couldn't be shunned just because of little bit of rain.
Deciding on 3 laps this week, a recovery from last week, we set off, Darren on his bike and me running beside - like a scene from Rocky. [Like, but more dusty than Rocky]
We were there though heading round the lake in the rain like a couple of escaped residents from an old peoples home[Sorry Dixie]. Its funny, but whoever I run with always asks how I feel after a about a mile, I obviously don't look good, my reply is always the same ''@~#!!<> terrible, what do you think''. They generally don't ask anymore.
I made the first lap quite well actually and with my enthusiastic company kept a briskish pace. Darrens hands had gone blue with the cold, frozen to his handlebars and the wind was whistling up his shorts but he went on. I personally would have said stuff this, friend or not and gone home but he stayed and we bonded, 2 silly sods who should have known better, on a mission.
The rain never let up but at least it wasn't snow like when Nigel dragged me around Newlands Corner in December. Not lucky with the weather when I have company.
My race top displaying my name and Giving to Georges logo gaining quite a few remarks as we went along. We stumbled into the final lap and then seemed to find our pace, not too many people in the way this week, and with just over a mile to go Dixie has a moment. Off the bike he jumps and starts to run with me, I was well impressed and so should he be. We rounded the final corner past the waterfall and headed up the hill both running to the finish point of the tea wagon and we did it.

A well deserved cuppa rosy lea and a photo opportunity of my mate and me.
I wouldn't have done it today without his help and despite the weather I think he enjoyed it too[fool].

Any comments gratefully received, its easy to do, get interactive with me.

Back to 1974 this week for
ARGENT and ''HOLD YOUR HEAD UP''

 And if it's bad
Don't let it get you down, you can take it
And if it hurts
Don't let them see you cry, you can take it

Hold your head up, hold your head up
Hold your head up, hold your head high

And if they stare
Just let them burn their eyes on you moving
And if they shout
Don't let them change a thing what you're doing

Hold your head up, hold your head up
Hold your head up, hold your head high
